28 September is World Rabies Day

Mad Dogs and MeerkatsTo herald World Rabies Day on the 28th of September, nature show 50/50 will be raising awareness about the devastating disease by dedicating a segment to a discussion of the effect and spread of rabies in Africa.

The show will feature an insert about its prevalence in rural areas and how Kruger National Park vets monitor the spread of infection in wild animals.

Be sure to watch the episode of 50/50 on Monday 26 September at 7.30 PM on SABC 2. For an extensive study of rabies in South Africa, read Mad Dogs and Meerkats: A History of Resurgent Rabies in South Africa by Karen Brown:

In the run up to World Rabies Day on the 28th of September, 50|50 provides a platform to raise awareness about rabies, a disease that kills 55000 people around the world every year, many of whom are children. In this insert, we introduce the severity of rabies and while it is most prolific in rural areas, it is becoming an issue in urban areas too.

We meet a community doctor who has to deal with the reality of rabies regularly and often when people come too late. Responding quickly when one is bitten, is critical – if you wait for the symptoms to show it is often too late. Post-exposure treatment saves the lives of around 15 million people around the world every year.
